The River Kings – Fall Chinook Salmon
They are the “Heavyweights” of the Pacific Northwest Salmon. Fall Chinook (often called “Upriver Brights”) are the largest, hardest-fighting salmon to enter the Columbia River system. These fish are built for battle, entering the river at the peak of their size and strength, ready to give even the most experienced anglers a run for their money.
-
The Quarry: These are the true giants of the Mid-Columbia and the legendary Hanford Reach. A typical Fall Chinook weighs in at 15–25 pounds, but we every so often tangle with a “Hawg” pushing 40+ pounds. They are aggressive, powerful, and known for long, screaming runs that will leave your heart racing.
-
The Strategy: In the Hanford Reach, it’s all about the “Downhill Troll.” We target these fish in deep holes and gravel bars using Super Baits, large Pro-Troll flashers, and the classic “plug cut” herring. When a Fall Chinook hits, it isn’t subtle—the rod buried in the water is your only warning before the fight begins.
-
River Conditions: Fall on the Columbia is spectacular. The water levels are generally more stable than in the spring, and the Hanford Reach offers some of the most scenic, untouched desert river vistas in the country. The weather is often crisp and clear, making for perfect days on the water.
-
Gear Up: September can be warm, but October mornings on the river have a sharp bite. We recommend dressing in layers: a base layer, a warm fleece or hoodie, and a windproof outer shell. Don’t forget polarized sunglasses—the glare off the water can be intense during those golden autumn afternoons.
-
Prime Time: September through late October (Late September is traditionally the peak of the Hanford Reach run).
